It is not the contract value shown by your broker and it is not your net profit. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) defines a separate method for calculating F&O turnover in its Guidance Note on Tax Audit. That figure is used to determine whether a tax audit applies.

F&O income is business income and is reported in ITR-3. See our ITR-3 guide and our F&O and intraday trading tax guide for filing and reporting rules.

Key takeaways

F&O turnover is the sum of the absolute values of profit and loss on each trade. It is not contract value or net profit.

Futures and options are calculated the same way. The ICAI’s 2022 revision removed the requirement to add option sale premium separately.

F&O turnover determines whether a tax audit under Section 44AB applies.

Broker dashboards usually display contract turnover, not the turnover used for tax purposes.

Why F&O turnover matters

F&O turnover is not the amount on which tax is calculated. Income tax is based on your net business profit or loss.

The turnover figure is used to determine whether a tax audit under Section 44AB applies. For F&O trading, the audit threshold is Rs. 10 crore because receipts and payments are through banking channels.

Turnover also determines whether you can opt for presumptive taxation under Section 44AD. Section 44AD is available if turnover does not exceed Rs. 2 crore, or Rs. 3 crore if cash receipts and cash payments do not exceed 5 percent of the total.

The ICAI method

The ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit defines F&O turnover as the sum of the absolute values of profit and loss on each trade.

Turnover = sum of |profit on each trade| + |loss on each trade|

Calculate the profit or loss for each squared-off trade. Ignore whether the result is positive or negative, take its absolute value, and add every trade together.

Example:

Trade 1: Profit of Rs. 50,000

Trade 2: Loss of Rs. 30,000

Turnover = Rs. 50,000 + Rs. 30,000 = Rs. 80,000

The net profit is Rs. 20,000, but the turnover is Rs. 80,000.

The same method applies to both futures and options.

The 2022 change for options

Earlier editions of the ICAI Guidance Note required option sellers to add the premium received on the sale of options to the absolute profit and loss figure.

The ICAI removed that requirement in its 2022 revision. Under the current Guidance Note, option sale premium is not added separately when it is already reflected in the profit or loss from the trade, as it is in a broker’s P&L statement.

Options turnover is therefore calculated in the same way as futures turnover: the absolute sum of profits and losses.

Example:

An option seller receives Rs. 40 lakh in premiums during the year. The absolute sum of profits and losses from those trades is Rs. 6 lakh.

Earlier method: Turnover = Rs. 46 lakh

Current method: Turnover = Rs. 6 lakh

Turnover is not contract value

Broker platforms usually display the notional value of contracts traded. That figure is often labelled as turnover, but it is not the turnover defined by the ICAI for tax purposes.

For tax reporting and audit calculations, use the realised profit or loss from each trade, calculate the absolute value of every trade’s result, and add those amounts together.

Most brokers provide a tax P&L statement with realised profits and losses. Use that statement to calculate F&O turnover instead of relying on the turnover figure shown on the trading dashboard.

Example 1

You make two trades during the year.

Trade 1: Profit of Rs. 50,000

Trade 2: Loss of Rs. 30,000

Turnover = Rs. 50,000 + Rs. 30,000 = Rs. 80,000

Net profit = Rs. 20,000

Your taxable business income starts with the net profit, after adjusting for allowable business expenses.

Example 2

You close 200 F&O trades during FY 2025-26. The absolute values of the profit or loss on each trade add up to Rs. 75 lakh. Your net profit for the year is Rs. 4 lakh.

F&O turnover is Rs. 75 lakh. This is below the Rs. 10 crore audit threshold under Section 44AB for digital transactions.

It is also below the turnover limit for presumptive taxation under Section 44AD, subject to meeting the other conditions of that section.

Your taxable business income starts with the net profit of Rs. 4 lakh, after allowable business expenses.

How to calculate turnover from your broker’s P&L

Download your annual tax P&L statement from your broker for the relevant financial year. For example, in Zerodha, open Console, select Reports, then Tax P&L, choose the financial year, and download the report.

Use the realised profit or loss for each completed trade. Take the absolute value of every trade’s result and add those amounts together.

Do not use the turnover figure shown on your broker’s dashboard. That figure usually represents the notional value of contracts traded, not turnover under the ICAI Guidance Note.

If you use accounting software, confirm that it calculates turnover as the absolute sum of trade-wise profits and losses under the current ICAI Guidance Note.

Reporting turnover in ITR-3

F&O income is reported in ITR-3 as business income.

Enter your turnover under Schedule BP, report your business expenses, and report your net profit or loss. Use the business code that applies to derivatives trading.

Keep your broker’s tax P&L statement, your turnover calculation, and records supporting your business expenses. The Income-tax Department can compare your return with information available through the Annual Information Statement (AIS).

Turnover and tax audit

Section 44AB requires a tax audit if business turnover exceeds Rs. 1 crore. The limit increases to Rs. 10 crore where cash receipts and cash payments do not exceed 5 percent of total receipts and payments. F&O trading is generally settled through banking channels, so the higher limit usually applies.

Section 44AD contains a separate audit trigger. If you have opted for presumptive taxation under Section 44AD in an earlier year and later declare income below the prescribed percentage or report a loss while your total income exceeds the basic exemption limit, an audit may be required if the conditions in the section are met.

Common mistakes

Using contract value from the broker dashboard as turnover.

Adding option sale premium separately under the pre-2022 ICAI method.

Treating turnover and net profit as the same figure.

Assuming that reporting a loss automatically requires a tax audit.

Failing to keep the trade-wise P&L used to calculate turnover.

Frequently asked questions

How is F&O turnover calculated?

Add the absolute value of the profit or loss from every completed trade. A profit of Rs. 50,000 and a loss of Rs. 30,000 produce turnover of Rs. 80,000.

Is option sale premium included separately?

No. The ICAI removed that requirement in its 2022 revision of the Guidance Note on Tax Audit. If the premium is already reflected in the trade’s profit or loss, it is not added again.

Is F&O turnover the same as contract value?

No. Contract value is the notional value of the contracts traded. F&O turnover for tax purposes is the absolute sum of trade-wise profits and losses.

Does a loss mean I need a tax audit?

No. A trading loss by itself does not trigger a tax audit. Audit requirements depend on the conditions in Section 44AB and, where applicable, Section 44AD.

Where is F&O turnover reported in ITR-3?

Report F&O turnover in Schedule BP of ITR-3 with your business income, business expenses, and net profit or loss.

Can I use my broker’s turnover figure?

Broker dashboards often display contract turnover instead of turnover calculated under the ICAI Guidance Note. Calculate turnover from the trade-wise realised profit and loss shown in your broker’s tax P&L statement.

Sources and references

ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit under Section 44AB (2022 revision, turnover computation)

Income Tax Department, e-filing portal — incometax.gov.in

Income Tax Act, 1961 — Sections 44AB, 44AD, 43(5)

Disclaimer

This guide is for general informational purposes and is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of July 2026.
