What changes for you as an investor?

If your mutual fund units are held in a demat account, setting up regular withdrawals or transfers has had an operational limitation. SEBI’s July 2026 framework is set to change that. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has extended standing instructions for Systematic Withdrawal Plans (SWP) and Systematic Transfer Plans (STP) to mutual fund units held in demat form. The facility is being implemented in stages, with the first phase scheduled for January 2027 and the second for April 2027. For investors, the change expands how recurring mutual fund transactions can be managed when units are held in demat form.

What has SEBI changed for mutual funds in demat account?

Investors can already register eligible SWP and STP standing instructions with mutual funds or their registrar and transfer agents for units held outside the demat framework. Mutual fund units held in demat form haven’t had the same standing-instruction facility.

SEBI’s circular dated 17 July 2026 provides a framework for extending it to demat holdings. Depositories will act as nodal facilitators and coordinate with other market participants to implement the mechanism.

An SWP periodically redeems mutual fund units according to an investor’s instruction. An STP periodically redeems units from one scheme and uses the proceeds to purchase units in another scheme of the same mutual fund. Once the new framework becomes operational, eligible demat-held units will also support recurring instructions for these transactions.

When can you use the new facility?

The circular took effect on 17 July 2026, while the facility has separate implementation deadlines. Depositories are required to jointly publish a standard implementation framework by 31 October 2026. This should provide further details about how the facility will operate across the depository system.

The actual rollout will follow in two phases. Phase I must be implemented by 31 January 2027. It will allow standing instructions based on a fixed number of units. Phase II must be implemented by 30 April 2027. It will introduce instructions based on a fixed monetary amount. If the option isn’t currently available through your demat account, you may need to wait until the relevant implementation phase becomes operational.

How will Phase I work?

Phase I covers unit-based SWP and STP instructions. Suppose you hold mutual fund units in demat form and want 100 units redeemed every month through an SWP. The standing instruction can specify 100 units as the recurring quantity.

The amount you receive will depend on the applicable NAV when those units are redeemed. If the NAV changes between withdrawals, the value of 100 units will change as well. A unit-based STP will follow a similar mechanism. A specified number of units will be redeemed periodically from the source scheme, and the proceeds will be used to purchase units of another scheme of the same mutual fund.

Investors who plan withdrawals around a particular rupee amount will need the functionality scheduled under Phase II.

What changes under Phase II?

Phase II introduces amount-based standing instructions. For example, an investor who wants to withdraw ₹10,000 every month through an SWP will be able to specify that amount in the instruction. The number of units redeemed will vary according to the applicable NAV. At an NAV of ₹50, a ₹10,000 withdrawal would require 200 units, before considering other applicable transaction factors. A change in NAV would change the number of units required for the next ₹10,000 withdrawal.

The amount-based facility will also apply to STPs. Investors will be able to specify a recurring amount for transfer rather than a predetermined number of units. This phase is scheduled to be implemented by 30 April 2027.

What should you understand before setting up an SWP?

A regular SWP payment comes from the periodic redemption of units in your existing mutual fund investment.
When you choose a fixed withdrawal amount, the number of units redeemed can vary with the NAV. Your remaining corpus will depend on the units left after each redemption and the subsequent performance of the scheme. Consider an investor who needs ₹20,000 every month from a mutual fund investment.

The standing instruction can automate those withdrawals once amount-based instructions become available for demat units. The investor still needs to assess whether the corpus can support that withdrawal pattern for the intended period.

The SEBI framework simplifies the recurring transaction process for demat holdings. It doesn’t prescribe an appropriate withdrawal amount or frequency for an individual investor.

How will an STP work for your demat-held units?

An STP involves redemption from a source scheme followed by investment of the proceeds into another scheme of the same mutual fund. Suppose you hold units in one scheme and want a specified amount moved periodically into another eligible scheme of the same mutual fund. Once the relevant standing-instruction facility is operational, the recurring transaction can be registered for demat-held units.

The source-scheme redemption remains an important part of the transaction. Before setting up an STP, check the applicable tax treatment and any scheme-specific conditions attached to the redemption. Your reason for transferring the investment also deserves consideration. The availability of an automated instruction doesn’t determine whether the source and destination schemes suit your portfolio, investment horizon or asset allocation.

Does the SEBI update change mutual fund taxation?

The July 2026 circular deals with standing instructions for demat-held mutual fund units. Existing tax provisions continue to govern the underlying redemptions.

With an SWP, units are redeemed periodically. Capital gains arising from those units are taxed according to the applicable rules, which can depend on the type of mutual fund, holding period and other relevant tax provisions. The full SWP withdrawal shouldn’t automatically be treated as capital gain. The tax calculation considers the gain arising on the units redeemed.

An STP also involves redemption from the source scheme. A tax liability can therefore arise even when the proceeds are subsequently invested in another scheme.

Investors planning recurring transactions should include these tax consequences when deciding the amount and frequency of an SWP or STP.

Do existing mutual fund investors need to take any action?

Investors aren’t required to move their mutual fund holdings into demat form because of this change.

If your mutual fund units are already held outside demat form and your existing SWP or STP arrangement serves your requirements, the circular doesn’t require you to change that arrangement. For investors who already hold mutual funds in demat form, the upcoming facility provides an additional way to automate eligible recurring transactions.

Investors considering demat holdings should evaluate the holding format based on their broader requirements rather than this facility alone. The July circular expands the functionality available within demat holdings without changing the fundamental characteristics of the mutual fund investment.

What should demat investors watch next?

The immediate development to watch is the standard implementation framework that depositories are required to publish by 31 October 2026. It should provide greater clarity on the process investors will follow to register and manage standing instructions.

After publication of that framework, the next deadline is 31 January 2027, when unit-based SWP and STP instructions are scheduled to become operational. Amount-based instructions are due by 30 April 2027.

If you already hold mutual funds in demat form and plan to use an SWP or STP, check which phase covers the type of instruction you need before trying to register it.

SEBI’s framework gives demat investors access to a recurring transaction facility that has previously been unavailable for these holdings. Your decision to use it should still begin with the purpose of the withdrawal or transfer, the amount involved, applicable tax consequences and how the transaction fits into your financial plan.

[273
["mutual fund overlap calculator

Mutual Funds In Demat Account: What SWP & STP Mean For You

<meta name="description" content="SEBI has extended SWP and STP standing instructions to mutual funds in demat account.
