In each of the 4 households it studied, it was the single biggest source of value, ahead of fixing costly products, building goal plans and ongoing monitoring.

How much behavioural coaching was worth

Household

Behavioural coaching (bps of net worth a year)

Gross value of all advice (bps)

Share from behaviour

Swathi and Harsha, Hyderabad

131

239

55%

Varun and Nidhi, Delhi

100

236

42%

Divya and Raghu, Bengaluru

91

162

56%

Farid and Sameera, Mumbai

169

317

53%

The test the report applies is simple: would the client have decided worse without the advisor in the room? If yes, the cost of that worse decision counts as value, discounted by how much of the outcome the advisor actually caused.

What it looked like in practice

None of the 4 cases involved timing the market or picking a winning fund. Each involved a decision the family was about to get wrong.

A flat that could wait until 2030

Farid and Sameera had all but decided on a ₹2.2 crore flat in Mumbai. The EMI of ₹1,02,000 a month was about 16% of Farid’s income and not far above their ₹75,000 rent. But the flat needed ₹1.2 crore upfront, more than the ₹1.19 crore the family had invested. A simulation put their chance of funding retirement at 58% if they bought, with 4 of their 5 goals at risk. The advice was to wait until 2030. The report says the harder work was helping them accept it, and values that coaching at 169 basis points a year.

A 7th property not bought

Divya and Raghu already held 6 Bengaluru properties, 66% of their net worth, with just 2% in equity and ₹3 crore of goals due by 2034. They were looking at a 7th. The advisor talked them out of a purchase that would have locked another ₹1.25 crore into an asset class they were already heavy in, and prepared them for the first time their new equity investments would fall.

A SIP that survived an EMI squeeze

Varun and Nidhi’s ₹60,000 monthly SIP was being squeezed by EMIs on a ₹1.65 crore home loan. They were heading for a 2-year pause. At the report’s assumed 12% equity return, ₹14.4 lakh of skipped contributions would have been worth about ₹56 lakh by 2039, the year their retirement is mapped to. Cash freed by fixing other leaks kept the SIP running.

A trading habit ended with the client’s own numbers

Varun believed his stock and derivative trading gave him an edge. Counting losses, costs and what the money could have earned elsewhere, it was costing about ₹1 lakh a year. Rather than argue, the advisor kept showing him his own numbers until the habit gave way to a systematic plan.

Ending years of inaction on concentration

Swathi and Harsha had 88% of their investable assets, ₹7.3 crore, in 2 US tech stocks, with company stock vests piling up for years. Unwinding that concentration, diversifying each new vest as it arrives and lifting savings from under 10% to 25% of cash income account for most of their 131 basis points.

Why the pattern repeats

The 4 families were very different in age, income and wealth, but the errors were familiar:

Anchoring on the wrong test. An affordable EMI felt like an affordable flat.

Familiarity bias. Property felt solid and equity felt risky, 20 years after the first purchase.

Overconfidence. A trading habit felt like skill.

Inertia. Stock vests accumulated because selling felt like a decision, and holding did not.

Present bias. Pausing a SIP for 2 years felt like a small, reversible step.

Navneet Munot, MD and CEO of HDFC Asset Management Company, makes the same point from the fund side in the report. The gap between a fund’s return and an investor’s return, he says, is behavioural: it opens when investors react to short-term volatility. His shorthand for wealth creation is STP: sound investment, plus time, plus patience. He points to March 2026, a volatile month when markets corrected on Middle East tensions and SIP contributions still crossed ₹30,000 crore, as a sign of growing investor maturity.

Soumya Rajan, founder of Waterfield Advisors, argues that the patterns do not disappear as wealth grows. “Wealth does not immunise people against behavioural error,” she says. Larger decisions are harder to reverse.

Why this part of advice resists automation

The report expects AI to change advice unevenly across its 4 dimensions:

Dimension

How exposed to automation

Course correction

Most exposed. Spotting costly funds and idle cash is pattern work, and software is already good at it.

Goal planning

Partly. Software can draft a plan in minutes; keeping a family on it for years is harder.

Behavioural coaching

Least exposed. Persuading a couple who have decided on a ₹2.2 crore flat to wait takes a person.

Continuous monitoring

Mixed. It needs someone to notice change, such as a career move or a family rift, before the data shows it.

Munot takes a similar view: AI can crunch numbers at speed, but machines will not replace human judgement or connect with investors at an emotional level, especially when markets turn volatile.

How to tell if you need it

Behavioural coaching is hard to buy on its own and hard to see once you have it. A few signs that it would be worth more to you than better fund selection:

You are about to make a decision that is large, hard to reverse and emotionally loaded, such as a home purchase, a business exit or a large inheritance.

One asset, whether property, employer stock or a single sector, dominates your net worth and you have not acted on it.

You have paused, or are thinking of pausing, a SIP because cash feels tight.

You trade actively but have never calculated your all-in result, including costs and what the money could have earned elsewhere.

Big money decisions in your family are made jointly, and 1 person’s doubt keeps stalling them.

If any of these apply, the value of a second opinion is likely to show up not in next year’s return, but in a mistake that never happens.

Source: 1 Finance, What personalised financial advice is actually worth, 2026 research report.
