Ask a family what their financial advisor did for them last year and most will quote 1 number: the portfolio return. If that is the only number they see, almost any advisory fee looks too high.
1 Finance’s 2026 research report, What personalised financial advice is actually worth, tries to put a value on everything else. Its finding: across the firm’s client work, personalised advice adds 150 to 300 basis points (1.5% to 3%) of a family’s net worth a year, after an advisory fee of 0.25% of investable assets. For a family worth ₹2 crore, that is ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh a year.
Most of that value never appears on a performance report. Here is how the report measures it, what it found in 4 real households, and where the method deserves scrutiny.
Portfolio return is the easiest number to measure, so it ends up standing in for all the work an advisor does. The problem is that a large part of the work never touches a return figure.
| Visible on a performance report | Invisible to a performance report |
|---|---|
| Portfolio return vs benchmark | Tax saved through restructuring |
| Fund selection and rebalancing | High-cost debt closed, freeing cash flow |
| Asset allocation percentages | SIP kept running through a cash flow squeeze |
| NAV growth over time | A bad purchase prevented before it happened |
| An insurance gap found and closed | |
| Nomination errors corrected; a will prepared |
The report argues this has a compounding cost. If an advisor is judged on returns, the hours go to returns. The estate review that finds a nominee unchanged since a divorce, or the insurance review that finds a gap large enough to wipe out 10 years of saving, gets whatever time is left.
The framework splits advice into 4 kinds of work. Each has a boundary test, a single question that decides whether an item belongs there, so the same rupee is not counted twice.
| Dimension | What it covers | Boundary test | Value observed a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course correction | Fixing what is costing the client money today | Without the advisor, would the client still be losing this money tomorrow? | 11 to 85 bps |
| Goal planning | Designing the path to each life goal | Does every major goal now have a funding source and a date? | 22 to 46 bps |
| Behavioural coaching | Getting the big decisions right, such as whether to buy a flat or pause a SIP | Would the client have decided worse without the advisor in the room? | 91 to 169 bps |
| Continuous monitoring | Keeping watch over accounts and deadlines, year after year | Would this have slipped without someone keeping watch? | 14 to 37 bps |
The 4 dimensions run across 6 areas of a financial life: estate, liabilities, investments, income and expenses, insurance, and tax. A portfolio review looks at only 1 of those 6 areas. A single home loan, the report notes, can touch all 4 dimensions: closing a costlier loan first, structuring the new one, talking the client out of a bigger house than they need, and timing prepayments for years afterwards.
Every estimate starts with 1 question: what would have happened without the advice? The gap between that path and the advised one is the gross value. Gains that happen once, such as a tax exemption secured, are spread over the 10 to 20 years they protect rather than booked in a single year.
Each item is then discounted by how much of the outcome the advisor actually caused:
| Credit | When it applies |
|---|---|
| 100% | The advisor was the sole cause |
| 75% | The advisor led, but the client did real work too |
| 50% | The advisor was 1 of several factors |
| 33% | The link is plausible but indirect |
Net value is gross value across all 4 dimensions, in basis points of net worth, minus the yearly fee. Because the fee is charged on investable assets, it is converted to basis points of net worth so both sides share 1 base.
The report applies the method to 4 Indian families, with names and some details changed.
| Household | Net worth | Core situation | Fee (bps) | Gross value (bps) | Net value (bps) | Value-to-fee | Net value a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swathi and Harsha, Hyderabad | ₹10.12 crore | 88% of investable assets in 2 US tech stocks; ₹20 lakh of tax at stake on a home upgrade | 21 | 239 | 218 | 11 : 1 | ₹22.1 lakh |
| Varun and Nidhi, Delhi | ₹2.21 crore | Trading habit; ₹1.65 crore home loan; SIP about to pause; 4 LIC policies | 14 | 236 | 222 | 17 : 1 | ₹4.9 lakh |
| Divya and Raghu, Bengaluru | ₹8.88 crore | 6 properties (66% of net worth); 2% in equity; ₹3 crore of goals by 2034 | 9 | 162 | 153 | 18 : 1 | ₹13.6 lakh |
| Farid and Sameera, Mumbai | ₹1.90 crore | 77 fund schemes; 4 LIC policies; a ₹2.2 crore flat putting 4 of 5 goals at risk | 16 | 317 | 301 | 20 : 1 | ₹5.7 lakh |
3 patterns stand out.
Behavioural coaching was the largest source of value in every household. It contributed 91 to 169 basis points, between 42% and 56% of each family’s gross value. It came from a flat purchase postponed to 2030, a 7th property not bought, a SIP kept alive through an EMI squeeze and a trading habit ended. Little of it had anything to do with markets.
The advice that mattered most is invisible to the usual measures. A ₹20 lakh tax bill planned down to zero, or a property purchase put off, will never move a return figure.
The fee was a small fraction of the value. It came to 9 to 21 basis points of net worth, and gross value to 11 to 20 times the fee. For Farid and Sameera, a fee of about ₹30,000 bought an estimated ₹6 lakh of value in the year.
The report is open about its assumptions, and they matter when reading the numbers:
The credit levels push the other way. An item is counted at full value only when the advisor was the sole cause, and the report says its aim is to understate.
The framework doubles as a checklist for judging any advisory relationship. Before your next review, ask for a list of what was done in the past year across all 6 areas, with a rupee figure against each line. Then check each dimension:
A relationship built only on fund selection covers course correction and part of goal planning. The report’s point is that the larger share of value usually sits in the rest.
