Maximizing Credit Card Rewards: A Comprehensive Guide
Unlock the secrets of maximizing credit card rewards. Learn about cashbacks, reward p...
If you shop regularly on Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, or Zomato and want straightforward cashback without juggling complex reward programs, the HDFC Millennia Credit Card has probably appeared on your shortlist. It’s one of the most widely held cashback cards in India — but the headline 5% cashback figure tells only part of the story.
In this article, we’ll break down the card’s current fees, how the CashPoints system actually works, what the monthly caps mean for real-world value, and how it compares to other popular cashback cards in 2026. Most importantly, we’ll help you decide whether this card makes sense for your spending pattern — and if yes, how to use it smartly.
The HDFC Millennia Credit Card is a digital-first cashback card aimed at millennials and frequent online shoppers. It offers 5% cashback across ten leading brands — Amazon, BookMyShow, Cult.fit, Flipkart, Myntra, Sony LIV, Swiggy, Tata CLiQ, Uber, and Zomato — and 1% cashback on most other spends.
Positioned as an entry-level card with a moderate annual fee, it sits below HDFC’s premium cards like Regalia, Diners Club, and Infinia. The card works on a CashPoints model, where rewards are credited as points that can be redeemed against your statement balance at a 1:1 value, or used for travel bookings and the product catalogue at a lower rate.
The catch and there is one — is that monthly earning caps limit total cashback to roughly ₹2,000 per month, and the exclusion list has grown over the years. This review will help you figure out whether the Millennia still earns its place in your wallet in 2026.
Fee waiver: If you spend ₹1,00,000 or more in a year your Annual fee will be waived off.
| Charge type | Details |
| Finance charges | Up to around 3.75% per month (~45% per annum) |
| Cash withdrawal fee | 2.5% of the amount withdrawn or ₹500, whichever is higher |
| Late payment fee | ₹100 for outstanding balances of ₹100–₹500, rising to ₹1,300 for balances above ₹50,000 |
| Foreign currency markup | Around 3.5% on international transactions — verify current rate |

The free domestic lounge access that the card used to offer was removed in December 2023. Today, domestic lounge access is tied entirely to the quarterly spend milestone. This means you get one lounge access if you spend ₹1,00,000 or more in a calendar quarter.
There’s no lounge access for international airports.
The Millennia offers cashback in the form of CashPoints:
5% cashback on 10 partner brands (Amazon, BookMyShow, Cult.fit, Flipkart, Myntra, Sony LIV, Swiggy, Tata CLiQ, Uber, Zomato). Maximum CashPoints per statement cycle is 1000 CashPoints.
1% cashback on all other eligible spends. Maximum CashPoints per statement cycle is 1000 CashPoints.
10% additional cashback on swiggy dineout via PayZapp/SmartBuy
This means total monthly cashback is effectively limited to around ₹2,000.
Fuel Benefit
1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle.
Reward exclusions
No CashPoints are earned on: fuel, EMI transactions (including EMIs on the 10 online brands), wallet loads, rent payments, and government-related transactions. The exclusion list has expanded over time, so check current terms before relying on a category.
CashPoints can also be used for travel bookings such as flights and hotels through the SmartBuy portal, as well as for rewards from the SmartBuy catalogue. However, when redeeming for flights or hotels, the value drops to ₹0.30 per CashPoint.

The Millennia has shifted from being a broadly rewarding everyday card to one that is rewarding only within tight parameters. The 5% headline rate on ten brands remains, but the surrounding ecosystem, caps, exclusions, surcharges, redemption fees, and lounge changes, has been steadily tightened.
Two practical implications:
| Category | HDFC Millennia | Amazon Pay ICICI | SBI Cashback | Axis ACE |
| Joining/Annual Fee | ₹1,000 + taxes | Lifetime Free | ₹999 + GST | ₹499 + GST |
| Fee Waiver | ₹1L annual spend | Not applicable | ₹2L annual spend | ₹2L annual spend |
| Base Reward | 1% cashback | 1% cashback | 1% cashback | 1.5% cashback |
| Accelerated Reward | 5% on 10 partner brands | 5% Amazon (Prime), 3% (Non-Prime), 2% partners | 5% on all online spends | 5% utilities (Google Pay); 4% Swiggy/Zomato/Ola |
| Monthly Cap | ~₹2,000 total | No hard cap (category limits apply) | ₹5,000 per cycle | Caps on accelerated categories |
| Welcome Benefits | 1,000 CashPoints | EazyDiner + activation vouchers | None | None |
| Milestone Benefits | ₹1,000 voucher or lounge access (quarterly ₹1L) | None | Fee waiver at ₹2L | Fee waiver at ₹2L |
| Domestic Lounge Access | Only via quarterly milestone | None | None | 4 per year |
| Rewards Conversion | 1 CashPoint = ₹1 (statement) | Auto-credit to Amazon Pay | Direct to statement | Direct to statement |
The HDFC Millennia occupies a solid middle ground in the cashback card market.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Compared to Amazon Pay ICICI, the Millennia covers more brands but charges a fee and caps earnings, while Amazon Pay ICICI is lifetime free with auto-credited cashback. Compared to SBI Cashback, which gives a flat 5% on all online spends, the Millennia is more restrictive on which merchants qualify. Compared to Axis ACE, the Millennia lacks the 1.5% base rate and the four free lounge visits.
Should you get a Millennial Credit Card?
If approved, you typically receive a digital card first, followed by the physical card within a few working days
However, it works best as part of a card strategy rather than a sole card. Consider pairing it with:
The HDFC Millennia delivers real value for one clear profile: the regular online shopper whose spending aligns with its ten partner brands and who can hit ₹1 lakh annually. For that person, the realistic annual value, up to roughly ₹24,000 in CashPoints plus quarterly milestone rewards — is solid for a card that’s effectively free once the fee is waived. But given the monthly cap and very limited lounge access, this card in my opinion, may not work as a primary card.
Card features, fees, cashback rates, caps, partner brands, and exclusions can change over time. Several figures in this article — particularly finance charges, foreign currency markup, and age eligibility — should be verified against current official sources, as they vary by profile and are updated periodically. Always check the latest details on the official HDFC Bank website and review the Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC) before applying or making large spending decisions.
