The American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card has spent years as the card people recommend when someone asks for their first proper travel card. It sits in the middle of the market, not a beginner’s cashback card, and not an ultra-premium metal card. Its value has always come from milestone rewards: spend a certain amount in a year, unlock a bonus.

In March 2026, Amex changed those milestones. The card still works the same way, but the spending required to unlock its biggest reward has increased. That single change now decides whether this card is worth getting.

The real question is simple: how much do you spend on your credit card every year, and does that match what this card now expects?

Key takeaways

  • This is a milestone rewards card. Most of its value comes from hitting annual spending targets, not from everyday reward rates.
  • After the 2026 revision, the ₹10,000 Taj stay voucher now comes only after ₹7 lakh of annual spending, instead of ₹4 lakh.
  • The annual fee is ₹5,000 plus GST (₹5,900 total).
  • If you can comfortably spend around ₹7 lakh a year on one card, it can deliver excellent value. If your spending is closer to ₹2–4 lakh, there are usually better options.
  • It works best as your primary credit card, not as a secondary card you use occasionally.

What does the card offer?

The everyday rewards are straightforward.

You earn:

  • 1 Membership Rewards point for every ₹50 spent.
  • 3X Membership Rewards points on purchases made through eligible Reward Multiplier partners such as Apple, Flipkart, MakeMyTrip, Nykaa, Tanishq, and other participating merchants.

Some transactions do not earn points, including fuel, insurance premiums, utility bill payments, cash advances, and EMI conversions.

The real attraction is the milestone rewards. During each membership year, you receive:

Annual spendReward
₹1.9 lakh7,500 bonus Membership Rewards points
₹4 lakh10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points
₹7 lakh22,500 bonus Membership Rewards points + ₹10,000 Taj stay voucher

In your first year, you also receive a welcome bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards points after paying the annual fee and spending ₹15,000 within the first 90 days.

The travel benefits include:

  • 8 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits every year (maximum 2 per quarter).
  • Complimentary Priority Pass membership. The membership is free, but international lounge visits are chargeable.
  • Fuel surcharge waiver at HPCL pumps on eligible transactions below ₹5,000.
  • Standard American Express protections such as zero lost-card liability (when reported promptly) and emergency card replacement.

How much is a Membership Rewards point worth?

The value of Membership Rewards points depends entirely on how you redeem them.

If you redeem them through the American Express Platinum Travel Collection, each point is generally worth around ₹0.40–₹0.50. Taj hotel vouchers are usually worth about ₹0.40 per point, while some hotel partners such as Postcard Hotels can provide slightly higher value.

If you redeem points for standard shopping vouchers, the value is usually lower.

This is why the card’s regular reward rate is not particularly impressive.

At approximately ₹0.40 per point, earning 1 point for every ₹50 spent translates to an effective reward rate of well under 1%. On its own, that is fairly average.

The card becomes rewarding only when you unlock its annual milestones. That is where almost all the value comes from.

How much value do you actually get?

Let’s compare the rewards at different annual spending levels. The calculations below assume each Membership Rewards point is worth about ₹0.40 and the annual fee is ₹5,900.

If you spend ₹1.9 lakh in a year

You earn approximately:

  • 3,800 base points
  • 7,500 milestone bonus points

That’s just over 11,000 points, worth roughly ₹4,500.

After paying the ₹5,900 annual fee, you’re effectively behind. At this spending level, the card does not justify its cost.

If you spend ₹4 lakh in a year

You earn:

  • Base points
  • 7,500-point milestone
  • 10,000-point milestone

That’s roughly 25,000 points, worth about ₹10,000.

After deducting the annual fee, your net benefit is around ₹4,000. The card starts making sense, but the return is still fairly modest for the amount spent.

If you spend ₹7 lakh in a year

Now the card works exactly as it was designed to.

You receive:

  • Base points
  • All three milestone bonuses
  • ₹10,000 Taj stay voucher

That’s roughly:

  • 54,000 Membership Rewards points (worth around ₹21,000)
  • ₹10,000 Taj voucher

Total value is approximately ₹31,000.

After the ₹5,900 fee, you’re ahead by roughly ₹25,000, an effective return of about 3.6%.

This illustrates the biggest feature of the Platinum Travel Card—it doesn’t gradually become better as you spend more. Instead, it delivers most of its value only once you reach the highest milestone.

What changed in 2026?

Before March 2026, the ₹10,000 Taj stay voucher was available after spending ₹4 lakh in a membership year.

From 9 March 2026 onwards, the same voucher now requires ₹7 lakh of annual spending.

The ₹4 lakh milestone still exists, but it now awards only Membership Rewards points.

In practical terms, the card’s biggest reward now requires an additional ₹3 lakh of annual spending.

This isn’t unique to American Express. Several premium credit cards have increased spending requirements for their best benefits over the past two years.

However, it changes who this card is suitable for.

Earlier, someone spending around ₹4 lakh a year could extract excellent value from the card. Today, the ideal customer is someone comfortably spending around ₹7 lakh annually.

Who should get this card?

This card makes sense if:

  • You can naturally spend ₹7 lakh or more every year without increasing your expenses.
  • You prefer using one primary credit card for most purchases.
  • You redeem Membership Rewards points through the Platinum Travel Collection for maximum value.
  • You can make use of the Taj stay voucher.

You may want to skip it if:

  • Your annual card spending is around ₹2–4 lakh.
  • You mainly want strong everyday rewards.
  • You don’t want to chase annual spending milestones.
  • A cashback card would suit your spending habits better.

One final point is worth remembering.

Milestone cards create a temptation to spend extra simply to unlock the next reward. That only works if those purchases were already part of your budget. Spending more purely to earn a reward usually wipes out the benefit.

Bottom line

The American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card is still a strong travel rewards card—but only for the right person.

Its everyday reward rate remains fairly average. Almost all of its value comes from annual milestone rewards, and after the 2026 changes, the biggest reward now requires ₹7 lakh of spending instead of ₹4 lakh.

If you already spend around ₹7 lakh every year on one primary card, the Platinum Travel Card can comfortably justify its annual fee. If your spending is significantly lower, there are simpler cards that are likely to deliver better value.

Before applying, don’t look at the marketing brochure. Look at your credit card statements from the past year. Your actual spending is the best indicator of whether this card fits your wallet.
